In 1998, Mercedes Benz introduced the Star Diagnostic System. This is the "Factory" system that not only provides the greatest access to all Mercedes Benz "on board" systems, but the database of information to make sense of any vehicle problems. At Autowerkes Maine we utilize this system in our diagnosis of Mercedes Benz cars.

These approved work methods and techniques are safer and more efficient. We provide professional training for our technicians. If there is a manual or instructions for a particular task, we follow that manual. If advice or support is called for, we will seek out and consider that support. We use work sheets and check lists. We incorporate quality control into our work and double-check our accuracy. We subscribe to technician networks and forums for the latest ideas and findings. We are not working alone. We are part of a community of knowledge.

All Mercedes Benz vehicles from 1998-2004 are using a flexible service system (FSS) 2005 on use MBMS.

All of these cars require synthetic motor oil only

All service intervals are usually at or around 6,000 to 13,000 miles *

*We recommend oil service intervals 7,500mi. Up to 100k mi. then 5,000mi intervals there after.

There are 2 types of flexible services your car will require when service is due.
Your Mercedes instrument panel will display a wrench symbol in your instrument cluster counting down towards your next service.

  • 1 Wrench - A Service
  • 2 Wrenches - B Service

About FSS & Service A & B, What is It?

Mercedes-Benz (1998 and newer) use a Flexible schedule for maintenance called Flexible Service System, (FSS). The system is designed to offer a flexible service schedule which is directly based on driving habits. The service due is displayed in the multifunction display within the instrument cluster. This display indicates the days or distances remaining to the next suggested factory maintenance. Once the suggested service due has been exceeded, the wrench symbol, plus the message "EXCEEDED BY" will appear, when the ignition key is in position 2.

A detailed list of the applicable maintenance jobs is contained in the client's service booklet or the service sheet included within the service information system. Each model has a separate service sheet, which exactly defines the service required for that mileage and/or time limit.

Maintenance is due when you are prompted by indicators on the control panel of your vehicle. When a "single wrench" illuminates on your control panel this means it is time for an A-Service with an optional tire rotation**. After your Mercedes-specialist performs the scheduled A-Service maintenance, we recommend a B-Service when you have driven 6,000 to 10,000 * more miles. You are now on an alternating repeat maintenance cycle, starting with another A-service; a B-Service and so on.

For most Mercedes-Benz Models a Service A includes:
Change synthetic oil & filter, lubricate hinges and linkages, rotate wheels, inspect tires, check brake pads & rotors, inspect steering & suspension, check windshield washer Level and add as needed, check coolant, inspect belts, check tire pressure, check windshield and headlamp washers, road test, function a/c and heating system. Reset FSS Counter.

About the MBMS Service, What is it?:

Models from 2005 include services labeled either A-H or AX-BX (model dependent) which indicates various levels of needed maintenance. The system determines the needed service by time and distance. The letters designate combinations of service items needed and a "+" symbol designates a brake inspection needed. A service sheet is compiled by vehicle and the displayed letter sequence.

We also recommend the following services on the basis listed:

Brake fluid should be replaced:

  • Every 2 years
  • Preferably in spring time
  • Brake fluid must meet factory specifications

Coolant should be checked for sufficient protection:

  • Before the start of hot and cold seasons
  • According to factory guidelines coolant must be replaced every 3 years

Dust filters should be replaced:

  • At the scheduled service
  • When a car is exposed to severe dust conditions
  • When climate control is operating in the air circulation mode the dust filter should be replaced more frequently.

Activated charcoal filter requires replacement:

  • Every 45,000 miles or 2 years.

Fuel filters require replacement:

  • Every 60,000 miles.

Fluids in Differentials etc:

  • 60,000 miles

Spark Plug Intervals:

  • 4 Cylinder Engines-Every 30,000 miles or 4 Years
  • Straight Six Engines-Every 45,000 miles or 4 Years
  • 119V8 4 Engines-Every 60,000 miles or 4 Years
  • V12 Engines-Every 60,000 miles or 4 Years
  • 112 V6 Engines-Every 100,000 miles or 4 Years *
  • 113 V8 Engines-Every 100,000 miles or 4 Years *

*We recommend doing the plugs in these engines at 60,000 mi due to problems removing them and related "check engine" light issues from extended service terms.
